Ways in Cleaning Invisalign Trays: How You Can Teach Your Child

Has your child opted to use Invisalign aligners instead of the traditional metal braces? If so, then they should learn how to take care of them properly.

Why?

Well, if their aligners are not cleaned properly then it will be discolored and there would be a build-up of bacteria that causes an odor and even affects the health of their pearly whites. With this, it’s important to take the proper precautions in ensuring their aligners are always clean and are effective in ensuring their teeth are aligned and healthy.

As a pediatric dentist in Fairfax, VA, we give you ways on how your child can preserve Invisalign aligners:

1. Make sure that your child takes out their trays in the morning to brush their teeth and the trays

Because their mouth accumulates bacteria at night on the trays while they sleep, their morning routine should start with proper oral hygiene. This goes for the evening as well before they go to bed. Make sure that they use fluoride toothpaste to get rid of the bacteria in their teeth and gums.

2. Make sure that the aligners are soaked once a day

So that their aligners smell and look their best, they must be soaked either in a denture cleaner or in invisalign cleaning crystals. You can consult your pediatric dentist about where you can purchase such. Once they’ve finished soaking the aligners, use an extra toothbrush (make sure to have an extra toothbrush for the aligners) to brush away any plaque. After that, rinse them again before putting them back into the mouth.

3. Your child should never leave their trays laying out in the open

When eating, trays should be stored away in their case. If it is left in the open air, it could expose them to more build up bacteria. At the same time, it would risk your aligners to loss or damages.

Should you forget and leave them out for a few hours, be sure to soak and rinse them before allowing your child to put them back in their mouth.

4. Never eat or drink with the Invisalign aligners on

Remind your child never to have the alirners on when they are eating. If they’re eating, whether snacks or meals, they should have their aligners kept in the case. This is important as food particles may get stuck in aligners, then it may invisalign stain or even damage the trays.

Know that these invisalign aligners are not built to support the pressure of chewing food.

5. Never use colored toothpaste or soaps to clean Invisalign trays

Again, use the appropriate cleaning agent for your aligners. Also, never soak them in mouthwash or hot water as these may damage your trays.
